So much drama – but in a good way

Getting back to the tube with this post after being all about the theatre and classical music lately. So, wow. Major stuff happening on three of my fave shows – Lost Girl, Glee and Upstairs Downstairs – this week.

We didn’t see much of Dr. Lauren Lewis on LG this week, but what we did see of her was very revealing. No, not like that – get your minds out of the gutter! Lauren finally gives Bo (and us) the scoop on her girlfriend Nadia and how she came to be an indentured servant to the Ash. Since the episode is airing again a few times this week (check your listings), I won’t spill the beans entirely on this one – but I’ll just say to all the Team Lauren folks: be patient with this episode, there’s big payoff at the end. Then again, if you can’t wait, check out Dorothy Snarker’s snapcap at: http://www.afterellen.com/tv/lost-girl-recap-207  I especially love the Kenzism of the Week section – God love ya, Ksenia Solo! And God love Dorothy Snarker too!

Glee returned last week after a brief hiatus to make room for baseball – and this week’s episode was a historic one, to say the least. As the gang gets into their final rehearsals for their production of West Side Story, director Artie criticizes Rachel and Blaine for their love scenes – and when they both admit to being virgins, Artie questions how they can play passionate love without ever having experienced it. Oh, Artie – it’s called acting! Anyway, this gets Rachel and Blaine to thinking – we’d better get our cherries popped for the good of our performances (and, well, they’re both teenagers with adorable boyfriends – Finn and Kurt, respectively – so you do the math). Right wing Christian parent groups everywhere were setting the Fox network phone lines and e-mail on fire over this episode – cause, as we all know, that abstinence messaging is just working so well for teens. The Glee folks dealt with this subject in a respectful and intelligent manner – and the fact that one of the two couples in question is two gay boys was groundbreaking. They kept it real – and it was a very sweet episode in many respects.

And, finally, last night’s episode of Upstairs Downstairs (the reloaded version) – my favourite bits involved the house butler Mr. Pritchard. When he catches Ivy (the maid) bringing food to a now unemployed and homeless Johnny (formerly the house footman) at the back door, he invites Johnny in for a hot meal; and when Johnny heads out to find a room at a hostel, Pritchard gives him bus fare. Later in the episode, Agnes goes into labour in the bathroom while everyone else is downstairs listening to King Edward’s abdication speech on the radio. Lady Maud discovers her and – since this baby is coming out and won’t wait for a doctor – Pritchard joins her to assist with the delivery. It’s all good, and Agnes has a healthy baby boy. After performing this solid for his employer, Pritchard gets Johnny’s job back – so the house has its cute young footman back (and Ivy the possibility of an in-house boyfriend). God love ya, Mr. Pritchard!

My pal Ed tells me there was a particularly good episode of Harry’s Law on last night – this is a show I’ve been missing, since I’ve been watching either Downton Abbey or Upstairs Downstairs and recording Camelot during that time slot, so I’ll have to check it out On Demand sometime.

See anything good on the tube lately?
