Back to adult fiction, this time Catherine Hernandez’s latest novel Behind You. Even before its official release in May 2024, it was optioned for a film adaptation by Conquering Lion Pictures; as she did for the award-winning Compy Films adaptation of her acclaimed novel Scarborough, Hernandez will be writing the screenplay.

True crime series film editor Alma faces her own history of harm as she works on an episode about the Scarborough Stalker, an infamous serial rapist and killer who preyed on women and girls in her neighbourhood when she was a kid. As she comes to terms with the grim reality of the misogyny and misplaced onus of care that fueled those crimes and the subsequent police response, she finds herself now needing to confront her teenaged son’s behaviour toward his girlfriend in a social environment that continues to tolerate toxic masculinity, and fails to recognize the boundaries of clear consent. Behind You is a story of radical acceptance of harsh truths, navigated with resilience and determination, and worked through with hope and love.
